Let’s Talk Growing Media

I have been experimenting with the various soils located area the farm. Since we have so many Cohune trees on the property and they only grow in rich soil, I thought I would use some of the soil under the Cohune tree to start some seeds.

Soil from under a Cohune tree

Much to my disappoint nothing grew in the soil. I had high expectations of being able to scoop, plant and grow from the soil under and around the Cohune tree. I am unsure of what is missing as nutrients are concerned, as I am learning as I go. I have yet to try amending the soil with compose to help add some nutrients to it. This I will be doing this week coming.

With so much vegetation around me you'd think it would be easy to grow in the soil, but it's not. I had a good pile of compose to start on a very small scale, but that is gone now. Currently I have 2 more piles of compose composing but that won't but ready until October. In the meantime I going to more energy into growing hydroponically.
