Experiment in compost
I plant some of the same vegetables from the hydroponics system in a compost system. Basically I planted them in dirt mixed with compose. I wasn't surprised with the way the plants grew, I was surprised at how badly they were attacked by pests. I build a separate hoophouse made with a misquito proof mesh and yet the lettuce was destyroyed.
